Price for members:  £40.00
Code: OLEFR/2021

An essential introduction to the theory and practice of Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) electrification worldwide, with examples taken from the UK. This book is an approachable and comprehensive study of overhead contact systems, which explains the why as well as the what, aimed at those who are new to the topic. Published 2021. Pages 358. It is increasingly obvious that the future of railways is electric; moving the power source outside the train makes rail cheaper and more reliable, removes harmful particulates from the environment and means rail is one of the only forms of transport with a proven route to net zero carbon. This book is essential reading for all railway engineers wishing to understand how the system works, from national grid to train and back again. “Overhead Line Electrification for Railways” begins by setting out the case for electrification, describing its key advantages over self-powered trains. A brief history of the technical development of the system, with emphasis on the UK, is followed by a comprehensive description of the electrical operation of the system – including that of the train itself. There follows a detailed description of the mechanical configuration and behaviour of the system, including both fixed equipment and current collection devices. Tram and trolley systems are covered as well as metros, mainline and high speed railways. The interfaces between electrification and other railway subsystems are described in detail. The planning, design and construction processes for new electrification are explained, with a strong emphasis on keeping the considerable capital cost of installation under tight control. Testing and commissioning is also covered, as is maintenance and remote monitoring of the system. Appendices detail the build history of UK systems, basic parameters for every type of OLE and pantograph in the UK, and dual voltage locations. Throughout the whole book the emphasis is on safe operation of the system. At the end of this book you will not be able to undertake all the tasks involved in OLE design, but you will understand what needs to be done and why.
